This is not the case in the modern day society. It is increasingly becoming common for men to engage in otherwise female duties. The concept of male wives is probably derived from this fact.
It is not uncommon for the men in this discussion to be branded homosexuals. There is indeed a thin line between the kind of behavior they portray and homosexuality. Men who assume wifely duties cannot attribute this behavior to a single reason. It is usually a result of a combination of factors that bring out their feminine side more than the masculine one. It goes without saying that some parents are to blame for this state of affairs. Many of them, especially mothers are known to cross dress their children during their childhood years. A boy child will be dressed in female attire, shoes, and even made to carry female accessories. It may not be clear why this is done, but its effects are quite clear. Such a child is bound to experience problems expressing himself as a man.

Another possible reason that is usually seen in adulthood is when a woman is earning more than her husband and is therefore the breadwinner of the home. This automatically gives her an advantage over the man in the sense that she will call the shots.
It is even worse for men who have completely no source of income. Since they are entirely dependent on their partner, they will have to play by her rules. They will end up doing the dishes, cleaning the house and general housework. In the end they will end up as the wives in the relationship.
There is a plus side to having a male wife for the female folk. It is no secret that a majority of women are not satisfied with the level of sensitivity in their men. It is not the fault of the men since they are not wired to be sensitive and emotional.
The male wife provides an all in one solution to his partner. He is able to be more emotional than the average Joe since he is more in touch with his feminine side. He can offer what women get form their best friends while at the same time perform other manly duties.
The kind of life that people live in the twenty first century makes it a bit easier for male wives to co-exist with other members of the society. Most urban members of the population are liberal and open minded. It is only in a few places that are still backward where such people are shunned and disrespected. Modern men who assume wifely duties have it easier than their counterparts who did the same several years back.
