The romance of old tire swings

By Gina Portwood

There are cornfields covering miles on each side of the road while you drive down the dusty road of the mid-west. The landscape is dotted by various farms here and there. On the right side, you might come across a farmhouse. As you near it, you might see children cycling up and down the road. The farm surrounded by a fence and the gate in the front is open. Various large trees are scattered throughout the area around the farm. The front of the house might be having a particularly large tree. And, hanging from that tree is a large rope. A tire is hooked onto the rope's end. The end of the rope feature's a tire. What you're looking at is a tire swing.

Swings made from tires represent the unique western form of ruggedness. The farm stands alone, surrounded by fields. The farmer together with his family do what they need to do just to get by.They need little help from anyone else. The farm has been passed within each family heirloom hence they have always known how to get by each and every day.

Through the ages, tire swings have always stood for something. If you have watched western movies, there are probably scenes where you might see a polka dotted lady swinging on a tire swinging. There might also have been some young man standing behind her giving her a gentle push. You might have seen a different movie of a child swinging on the tire swing, very happy and having fun swinging with outstretched legs.

Word on the street is that Harvard has a tire swing. As part of the Harvard students get together, the students get to have a ride at the tire swing while enjoying hotdogs and loud music. If you think Harvard students are not capable of this, then you might need to duck as the students enjoy themselves swinging.

The students take this tradition of swinging on a tire swing as they break away from books and classes in a good way as they break from the monotony of education. People might not take the existence of a tire swing in Harvard seriously but Harvard does.

The tire swing is a symbol of something we remember about childhood but forget when we become adults.Remembering that time, somehow gives us a temporary relief from the hustle and bustle of today's world. The tire swing is a romantic entity that one can get pampered with but the experience is a shady memory for most of us.
